Mt Irvine
This house really wasn’t a house, rather a single garage with a somewhat makeshift balcony down one side and a storage shed underneath. The garage had been converted to contain a very small kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a sofa bed and bunks, which really was too small for the owners’ requirements.
The idea in the new design was to keep as much of the existing garage as possible and extend it to include a new large bedroom, shower room and toilet and to convert the original garage into a combined kitchen, living and dining room. The house was done to a tight budget and came in under $2,000 a square metre.

Under part of the new bedroom at the low end of the slope is a new bedroom and a laundry. This bedroom has external access and is for visitors.
The whole had to comply with Council’s level 3 bushfire code, so we decided to use corrugated Colorbond for the walls and roof, with concrete block for the underneath rooms. The decking is fire resistant hardwood supported on a steel frame.
